College of Health Professions Professor Carol Roye EdD, RN, CPNP, FAAN, has been awarded a prestigious grant from the American Nurses Foundation for her research into the use of long acting reversible contraceptives by teens and their impact on longterm reproductive health.
SOE Assistant Professor and Director of the STEM Collaboratory NYC™ Lauren Birney, EdD, continues to take charge in the efforts and expansion of the Billion Oyster Project—which was recently profiled in the Market Watch section of the Wall Street Journal and is featured on NBCLearn.com.
Sr. St. John Delany, PhD, received the Ethics and Community Service Award from the Rotary Club this June. Delany is also the director of the newly renamed Delany Center for Educational Enrichment, which ushered in a new era by offering a literacy program and summer camp.
SOE Professor Francine Falk-Ross, PhD, co-presented a workshop titled “Literacy in the 21st Century: Integrating Conventional and Digital Literacies in Classroom Learning Activities” at the 19th European Conference on Literacy in Klagenfurt, Austria.
SOE Assistant Professor of Educational Technology Thomas Lynch, EdD, launched a new online course called “Quantitative Text Analysis and Data Visualization for Teachers and Students.”
SOE Professor Peter McDermott, PhD, presented two papers—“Using the Affordances of the Digital Literacies to Transform Student Writing” and “Transforming Literacy Education in Sierra Leone: IRA’s Diagnostic Teaching Project”—at the 60th Annual Convention of the International Literacy Association in St. Louis, Missouri.
SOE Assistant Professor Jennifer Pankowski, EdD, is continuing to facilitate the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) workshops, a two-part course with both online and in-person components.
An article titled “Literacy Instruction Using Technology with Primary-Age and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners” by Shobana Musti-Rao, PhD, was recently selected by the Research Committee of the Council for Learning Disabilities as a “Must Read” article. She’s also been invited to present at the 37th International Conference on Learning Disabilities in October.
Acting SOE Dean Xiao-lei Wang, PhD, and Assistant Professor Raquel Plotka, PhD, co-presented “Adult Promotion of Children Narrative through Participatory Prompts” at the 22nd International Conference on Learning in Madrid, Spain, and “Syncretic Narratives of Multilingual Children: Implication for Academic Literacy Development” at the 19th European Conference on Literacy in Klagenfurt, Austria.
Maude Meisel, PhD, has a book chapter coming out in January. The chapter will appear in Cambridge University Press’ Dostoevsky in Context, which is part of their authors in context series.
Dyson Professor Iride Lamartina-Lens, PhD, and Associate Professor Susan Berardini, PhD, co-editors of the Estreno Contemporary Spanish Plays translation series, have been selected by the Association of Playwrights of Spain to receive the highly prestigious Premio a la Mejor Labor Editorial 2015 (Award for the Best Editorial Work 2015).

SOE associate professors Roberta Wiener, EdD, and Leslie Soodak, PhD, continue their work with the Office of Special Education (OSEP) 325T “STARS” Grant, which supported the development of the Inclusive Education Program—an innovative program that prepares students to be effective, dually certified adolescent educators able to teach students with and without disabilities.
